Where We Belong- Kristal Matthews
The platypus is an important part of my connection to Country as a Ngunawal woman. Living within and around our waterways, the platypus reminds me of the strong connection our people have always had with water and Country.
We continue to have a responsibility to care for Country, our culture and the knowledge passed down from our old people.
What We Carry- Jazz Matthews
The Coolamon here represents the many things we carry with us throughout life- our culture, knowledge, memories, experiences and stories. Some are positive, some are really challenging and all become part of our story.
We all have individual lived experiences and journeys but coming together reminds us that we do not have to carry everything alone.
We can share, support and learn from one another, while taking responsibility for what we carry within ourselves. As we grow, we have the opportunity to heal, break cycles and choose what we carry forward. What we pass on matters.
Through healing, strength and care, we can carry forward culture, love, knowledge and strength for those who come after us.
Self Reflection- Jazz Matthews
This artwork explores the journey of looking inward - taking a moment to pause, reflect and reconnect with self and Country. Surrounded by the elements of Country, the figure represents a quiet moment of reflection.
The flowing waterways and natural elements speak to the connections, experiences and places that shape who we are.
A reminder that through reflection, we can better understand ourselves, our connections and our place within Country.
